Absent from the 2021 UCI calendar due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Amstel Gold Race is making a comeback this weekend. Traditionally scheduled for a Wednesday, the race has been moved to Sunday April 10 instead of Paris-Roubaix because of the 1st round of the presidential election in France. For this edition, defending champion Wout van Aert will not be at the start, the Belgian being positive for Covid. Absent from Milan – San Remo and the Tour of Flanders, Julian Alaphilippe will also be absent, he who is aligned this week on the Tour of the Basque Country.
The field is therefore “free” for Mathieu van der Poel, winner of the Tour of Flanders a few days ago and who intends to chain the victory.
