The bombing of a theater in the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol in March was a war crime, according to Amnesty International.
The Russian word for “child” had been written in large letters on the ground outside the theater, where hundreds of civilians had sought refuge to escape the fierce fighting in the city.
Despite this, the theater was destroyed in a bomb attack on March 16.
Russia dropped two bombs
After talking to survivors and witnesses, as well as reviewing photographs, films and satellite images, Amnesty International concludes in a new report that “the attack was almost certainly carried out by a Russian fighter jet dropping two 500-kilogram bombs each detonating close and detonating at the same time. “.
In its investigation, Amnesty assesses that Russia apparently deliberately bombed the theater. “This makes the attack a war crime,” the organization writes.
However, it is not clear how many people were actually in the building when the bombs fell and how many died. The probable death toll is estimated to be lower than first feared.
