In May, a weapons amnesty was announced in Serbia, after the country was rocked by two mass shootings in a short period of time. The police have now announced the results: 108,833 illegal weapons have been handed in, reports the Serbian news agency Tanjug.
The majority of the weapons, 82,400, were handguns. 26,500 were mines or other explosive items. In addition, large quantities of ammunition were handed in.
The amnesty expired at midnight, the night before Saturday.
It was at the beginning of May that the two shootings took place. The first when a 13-year-old boy opened fire in a school in the capital Belgrade. The second occurred the following day when a 20-year-old assailant traveling in a car in the town of Mladenovac, five miles south of Belgrade, began shooting indiscriminately at people.
A total of 17 people were killed, several of them children.
