With our correspondent in Berlin, Nathalie Versieux

What a path that this young green politician of 30 years has taken! The Touré family arrived in Germany in 1991, after fleeing a putsch in Mali. But it was not until 13 years later that the anxiety of the next day ceased for the parents and their four daughters.

We were always afraid of expulsion. I was 12 when we finally got a real residence permit “, recalls the young woman born in the north of Germany at a time when only the right of blood counted. Today, she is Minister of Social Affairs of the land of Mecklenburg, in the north of the former GDR, the youngest in the country to a position of this importance. She is also the first sitting politician to grace the cover of the German edition of Vogue magazine.

White knit dress, long neatly combed black braids, determined look on a pale blue background. ” A young black woman who has political responsibilities in Germany – maybe this is a good statement at the right time and in the right place “, she adds, at a time when the extreme right is progressing in Europe. Aminata Touré regularly denounces the sexism and racism that have marred her political career.

Decidedly adept at great firsts, Aminata Touré has become, this summer, the first black woman elected minister in the region of Germany.
