Mathias Withoos painted Amersfoort in the 17th century. The canvas is a panorama of 207.5 x 427.5 cm. The restoration was therefore quite a challenge. “Tens of thousands of euros costs something like this,” says director Onno Maurer. “But that was not the only thing. It is technically complicated to restore such a large painting. You need a very large studio for it.” In the end, View of Amersfoort got the metamorphosis it deserved for so long, in CollectionCentrum Nederland. This depot houses part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum, but there are also large studios where the large canvas used to be.
