In a statement, the Pentagon confirms that it has received the information.
“We are aware of the reports of attacks on the USS Carney and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and will provide information as it becomes available.”
The Ministry of Defense has not been able to identify who is behind the attack, but it is believed to be linked to the war in Gaza. Since Hamas attacked it, several ships in the Red Sea have been attacked.
The Iranian-backed Huthi rebels in Yemen control a large part of the Yemeni coastal strip towards the Red Sea, but the militarily strong Islamist movement has not actively taken a stand in Israel’s war against terror-labeled Hamas in Gaza.
However, Huthi rebels have attacked and boarded the cargo ship Galaxy Leadership off As Salif, Yemen, on November 19. The ship is owned by Ray Shipping, which in turn is owned by Israeli businessman Rami Ungar. The vessel is said to have been brought to the port of Hodeida, Yemen.
Earlier in the day, there were reports that a British ship had been hit by rocket fire in the Red Sea.
