On September 2, seasoned speleologist Dickey fell ill with suspected stomach bleeding during his expedition of the 1,276-meter-deep Morca sinkhole in the Taurus Mountains of southern Turkey. He took part in an expedition to map the cave, which is the country’s third deepest.
Rescue teams from all over Europe gathered at the cave to help the experienced scientist – and after 12 days he was out. Dickey was too weak to climb out on his own and had to be carried on a stretcher between makeshift camps along the way to the exit.
– Mark Dickey is out of the Morca cave. He is doing well and being cared for by emergency personnel at the camp above, according to a statement from the Speleological Federation.
