With the western series American Primeval, Netflix has landed its first streaming hit of the new year. The brutal tale from the Wild West about settlers who get caught up in a major conflict has been at the top of the charts for a long time and is not for the faint of heart, as you can read in our series check.
Since American Primeval was conceived as a miniseries, a direct sequel after the end is unlikely. Producer and director Peter Berg has now teased the possibility of new episodes.

American Primeval creator hints at sequel as prequel
In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Berg also discussed the options for an American Primeval sequel. It makes most sense for the director to continue telling the completed Western epic as a prequel after the death of the main character Isaac (Taylor Kitsch):
We’re talking about it right now [Prequel]… That’s the way we would go if we did it, and I don’t know if we will, but that’s how we would do it.
Prequels are a popular way to continue films or series and delve into certain aspects of the past. For example, Dexter: Original Sin is currently running, a prequel series about the young years of the cult serial killer.
That’s why Peter Berg doesn’t think much of American Primeval Season 2
The director also talks to the Hollywood Reporter about why he’s less interested in a direct sequel to American Primeval. This is mainly because the young Two Moons and Devin stars Shawnee Pourier and Preston Mota had already aged noticeably during the filming of the first season.
According to Berg, there would be a sequel Big jump in time needed in the plot. At the moment he is much more interested in the past of the western scenario.
Another American Primeval season has not yet been officially commissioned by Netflix. All six episodes of the first season are streaming via subscription.Podcast preview: These series highlights await you in 2025
