Former US Senator Joseph Lieberman has died, the Washington Post reports.
He was a Connecticut senator from 1989 to 2013 and the Democratic Party’s vice presidential candidate in Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign.
He also tried to become the party’s presidential candidate in the 2004 election, without success. His full support for the US war in Iraq was controversial within the party.
In 2006, he also lost the primary election to become the Democrats’ representative in the Senate election. Despite that, Lieberman was re-elected to the Senate as an independent candidate.
He died on Wednesday, aged 82, of complications from a fall accident, his family said in a statement.
