It is a corner apartment of approximately 160 m2, and it is located in a building belonging to the Trump organization, the Trump international hotel and tower. The building is located at Columbus Circle, on the southwest corner of Central Park. It is equipped with a spa and a swimming pool. As shown in an old ad on the internet, this beautiful pied-à-terre has two bedrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows and as a result a panoramic and absolutely breathtaking view of the famous park located in the heart of Manhattan.
At the origin of the complaint by the federal judicial authorities is information from the anti-corruption non-governmental organization Global Witness. The NGO claimed in 2019 that the apartment had been purchased in 2014 by a Portuguese businessman representing the daughter of the Congolese head of state, for $7 million, that is to say above the average price of property in the building.
The property has apparently been unoccupied since its purchase, but charges have been paid via accounts located in Luxembourg, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates. According to the complaint from US federal prosecutors, “ the money used for the property was part of approximately $19.5 million in Congolese state funds embezzled through fictitious contracts, and these embezzled funds were used for the personal enrichment of the owner. »
