An American F-16 plane has crashed in the Yellow Sea in connection with an exercise in South Korea on Monday, reports the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

The pilot reportedly ejected and was subsequently rescued.

“The plane crashed into the water after taking off from an air base in Gunsan, 17.8 kilometers south of Seoul,” writes Yonhap.

Neither South Korea nor the United States have so far commented on the incident.

In May, a US F-16 plane crashed during a routine exercise in an agricultural area near the capital, Seoul. That time too, the pilot survived and no one else was injured in the crash.

Washington is Seoul’s main defense partner and the United States has about 28,500 troops in the country to help protect it against its nuclear-armed neighbor to the north.
