It was exciting news for Marvel fans: Amazon recently ordered a Spider-Man series starring Nicolas Cage. Shortly afterwards, however, another project from the Spider-Verse suffered a major setback. After five years in development, the highly anticipated Amazon series Silk: Spider Society has been canceled. But all is not lost yet.
Amazon decides against the Marvel series Silk: Spider Society
As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, among others, Amazon has decided to stop developing the Spider-Man series, which was supposed to be created for the streaming services MGM+ and Prime Video. The focus should be on the one known from the Marvel comics Korean-American superheroine Cindy Moon aka Silk stand who, like Peter Parker, were bitten by a radioactive spider.

The Amazon series would have already second live-action appearance of the character Cindy Moon recorded. Tiffany Espensen previously embodied the role in the Marvel Cinemativ Universe and was seen, among other things, in Spider-Man: Homecoming as Peter Parker’s classmate – but without superpowers.
Silk was supposed to be the first live-action series from Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). Behind the scenes, however, there were several creative reboots in five years of development. The project really gained momentum in 2022 when Amazon announced the official series order.
Silk: Spider Society was developed by Angela Kang, who previously served as showrunner on the zombie hit The Walking Dead for several years. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who do this animated Spider-Man universe at Sony were involved as producers.
As Deadline states, the story will be under Kang’s direction at least three different approaches have gone through. Among other things, Amazon is said to have requested a version in which the title character is less of a focus. Before the final cancellation, the series was finally intended to be tailored to a male audience, as The Ankler reports.
Spider-Man series about superhero Silk can still be saved
Hope is not yet lost. Sony Pictures TV is now allowed to take over the project other channels and streaming services. However, Angela Kang will no longer be involved. The former The Walking Dead showrunner is currently under contract with Amazon and will continue to develop film and series formats there.
It will be a while before we see the first-ever live-action series from SSU. The Spider-Man series noir, in which Nicolas Cage travels through 1930s New York as a private detective with a superhero past, is still in an early development phase. A launch on Prime Video is not expected until 2026 at the earliest.
