Amazon’s MMORPG New World is taking a worrying turn on Steam in 2024: There’s simply nothing going on in the online role-playing game. Since October 2023, it has lost 10 to 35% of its players every month. Things went downhill for 10 months. Now the turnaround is coming.
What is so worrying? Dry spells are normal for MMOs and MMORPGs. After a big release, it is to be expected that the number of players will drop. But normally such “dry spells” only last 3 or 4 months, then a new update comes along and brings at least some of the players back. But in New World, the dry spell has now lasted 10 months:
No other major MMORPG runs as poorly on Steam as New World
Why is this so atypical? Comparable MMORPGs on Steam also have “dry spells”, but they last a maximum of 5 months and are much less radical:
But New World actually manages 10 bad months in a row.
What’s particularly bad is that all the other players listed here have console versions or other launchers, but New World is only playable via Steam.
New World stops normal development and puts everything on one card
Why is that? Nothing has happened at New World in the last 10 months. Players have just been put off until “the big summer update” that is presented regularly.
Ultimately, it turned out that “the big summer update” would be primarily relevant for PlayStation and Xbox users, which disappointed PC gamers.
This policy of putting everything into the big update and doing little to develop the game has led to this drastic loss in player numbers over the last 10 months. Let’s see if this risk pays off. In June, many PC gamers seemed to have had enough of Amazon and New World: The MMORPG New World is currently on fire on Steam after Amazon’s announcement: Even a player with 5,000 hours has given up
