Amazon Reaches 100% Renewable Energy Goal 7 Years Early

Shopping Giant Amazon, Reached 100% renewable energy target 7 years ahead of schedule announced.

The company’s statement on this matter included the following: “2In 2019, Amazon set a goal to meet 100 percent of all electricity consumed across Amazon’s global operations with renewable energy by 2030. Amazon recently announced that it had reached that goal seven years ahead of schedule. To achieve that goal, the company became the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy for four consecutive years and invested billions of dollars in more than 500 solar and wind projects globally. Amazon has also taken significant steps to decarbonize its transportation and delivery fleet, deploying more than 24,000 electric vehicles worldwide. In 2023 alone, the company delivered 680 million packages to customers using these vehicles. Also in 2023, Amazon reduced its carbon intensity by 13 percent and its carbon footprint by 3 percent.

The company has continued to invest in and find new solutions to reduce packaging use and prioritize recyclable materials while ensuring orders reach customers seamlessly. Since 2015, Amazon has reduced the average packaging weight per shipment by 43 percent, preventing the creation of more than 3 million metric tons of packaging — nearly half a million metric tons in 2023 alone. In Europe, Amazon has replaced single-use plastic delivery packaging with 100 percent recyclable paper and cardboard packaging across its logistics center network, and in North America, it has replaced 95 percent of plastic air cushions in its delivery packaging with paper padding, with plans to eliminate them by the end of this year.

Earlier this year, Amazon.com.tr launched a new program called “Ships without additional Amazon packaging.” The program is used for eligible products that do not require any additional Amazon packaging. These products are shipped in the original manufacturer packaging with only the customer address label added. In addition to reducing waste, not using additional packaging also means that shipments are lighter. This results in fewer delivery emissions per package and less need for recycling.

Amazon’s sustainability program, which continues its decarbonization efforts, also includes community support and disaster response. Amazon’s global logistics capabilities uniquely position the company to help people when natural disasters strike. The company donated more than 2 million products to 44 disasters worldwide in 2023, including earthquakes in Turkey last year. Amazon has pledged cash donations to NGOs operating in the region and sent emergency aid supplies to the region from its stores in Turkey and around the world. The company also held donation campaigns in 16 Amazon stores worldwide.

A group of volunteers from the company’s logistics center in Istanbul also went to the affected area to help manage aid warehouses in the region and support the logistics and delivery of donated products. In late 2023, Amazon’s support for the region continued with the opening of the Gülümseten Hayaller Community House in Serinyol, Hatay, together with local aid organizations.

“Operating as a support center for local people affected by the disaster, this community house provides therapy and psychotherapy sessions for people of all ages, as well as STEM training for children. Since its opening, more than 2,500 people have benefited from the Smiling Dreams Community House through workshops and training.”
