With Thirteen Lives, master director Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) filmed the true story of the Tham Luang disaster: In the summer of 2018, a young soccer team and coach explored the extensive system of the Thai Tham Luang caves, when torrential rains prevented them from escaping the cave. An international team of helpers, including cave divers Richard Stanton (in the film: Viggo Mortensen) and John Volanthen (Colin Farrell), dared to rescue the 12 boys and their teacher before the prisoners died of lack of oxygen or thirst.

Howard focuses on building tension and avoids unnecessarily stylized moments. With Mortensen and Farrell he has cast two Hollywood stars, but he also gives a lot of space to many other actors in the rescue drama.
The result was well received by critics: “Irresistibly entertaining and breathlessly exciting“ called The Guardia n the film. When it comes to real-life, documentary-style dramas, there’s hardly anything better, says the Observer.
The Tham Luang rescue operation has been reviewed several times in various formats since 2018. In addition to Thirteen Lives, there are, among others, the feature film The Cave, the documentary series Thai Cave Rescue and the documentary The Rescue.
