Cruel Summer went relatively unnoticed in Germany. The versatile series is one of the most entertaining things the genre has produced in recent years. Season 1 is available in its entirety on Amazon* and Season 2 followed on Friday.

We explain what’s so good about Cruel Summer and what you can expect from Season 2.

That’s what Cruel Summer Season 1 is all about and that’s why it’s so good

Cruel Summer is an anthology series. That means: The relays tell a closed story. The Season 1’s thriller plot is spread over three time levels: June 1993, June 1994 and June 1995. The story begins in 1993 with 15-year-old Jeanette (Chiara Aurelia). She has a stable environment and is generally satisfied with herself.

Then Kate (Olivia Holt), the radiant high school queen who Jeanette secretly admires, disappears. Kate’s kidnapping is the epicenter of Cruel Summer. Jeanette takes her place in the social fabric joins Kate’s boyfriend and fills the hole she left in the cool clique. The series forces us to ask the following question: did Jeanette have anything to do with Kate’s disappearance?

Also interesting:

The result is a highly exciting mix of Dead Girls Don’t Lie, You and Gone Girl. The twists are sometimes a bit wacky, but wonderfully dark and abysmal. Hardly any turn can be predicted. This is also due to the narrative concept with the three time levels: Where other series lose the thread, Cruel Summer gains great dynamics from this rhythm.

The theme of Cruel Summer Season 2 is: Trust Nobody
