Rumors are currently circulating that Amazon is said to have bought the publisher Electronic Arts (FIFA 23, Battlefield 2042, Apex Legends, The Sims 4). Amazon is supposed to announce the purchase of EA today. MeinMMO explains what’s behind it.

Rumors are currently circulating that Amazon is said to have bought the game publisher Electronic Arts (EA). After Microsoft’s planned purchase of Activision Blizzard and Sony’s purchase of Bungie, this would be the next billion-dollar deal in the gaming world.

This was reported by the large page “USAToday” with reference to GLHF.

Electronic Arts has reportedly been looking for buyers for some time

Update from August 26, 2:44 p.m.: CNBC tweeted that Amazon would not bid on Electronic Arts. It relies on US financial journalist and market news analyst David Faber. EA’s shares rose earlier on a report citing a “rumour.” Furthermore, there is still no confirmation or denial of the rumor, neither from EA nor from Amazon.

The publisher is said to have been looking for possible buyers or the option of a merger for some time. Apple has also reportedly been in talks with EA to buy gaming giant EA, according to online site Puck. Disney and Amazon are said to have already held talks with EA about a possible purchase.

As early as May 2022, there had been rumors that Comcast-NBCUniversal wanted to take over EA. But here it should have failed because of the price and other things. At the time, EA had stated that it did not want to comment further on “rumors and speculation relating to mergers and acquisitions”.

We reported these rumors on MeinMMO in May 2022:

EA is said to be for sale – makers of FIFA 22 and Apex Legends are probably looking for huge buyers

What are these current rumours? Allegedly Amazon has now bought Electronic Arts. This news is scheduled to be announced later today, August 26th. There is no official confirmation of the purchase yet. The online site usatoday reports on the takeover.

What does the purchase mean? Buying EA could mean a lot of potential for Amazon. EA owns the rights to large series such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age or Dead Space – they also have a mega-seller with the “FIFA” series, a current top shooter in the program with Apex Legends and a ailing but large one with Battlefield shooter brand.

Amazon has been investing a lot of money in the development of games for a long time and had published a large MMORPG with New World and brought an MMO to Europe with Lost Ark. In addition, the shipping giant is currently investing a lot of money in in-house productions for its video streaming service and would gain access to many exciting brands with the acquisition of EA. Amazon’s current major project for Prime is the new series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”

We at MeinMMO have asked EA for a statement on the rumours. We’ll update the article when we know more.

USA Today distances itself from its own article

Update 6:15 p.m .: The rumor now seems to have died down.

  • Insider Jason Schreier says he spoke to five EA developers and none of them knew anything about a potential deal. That doesn’t mean the rumor is false, but at least EA hasn’t informed the staff yet.
  • USA Today, who broke this story, are now distancing themselves from their own source: GLHF, a Swedish “gaming/esports outlet” and the site’s affiliate. It said GLHF went against “editorial” standards, citing an unverified and uncredited source (via usatoday). All references to it have now been removed.
