A group of young women was supposed to fly to some kind of summer camp. Instead, the jet chartered by a mysterious organization crashes. The group has no choice but to survive on a deserted island. But little by little, the survivors have to realize that they didn’t end up somewhere in the middle of nowhere by accident.
The Amazon series The Wilds has long belonged to one of the best young adult series in the streaming sector. Even the controversial second season, which was expanded to include a group of young men in the same survival situation, still excelled when it focused on the female characters. The season 2 finale united both groups and raised exciting questions for the future. But what would have happened in season 3, we will probably never know – at least not on Amazon.

Season 1 of The Wilds hit 2020 like a bomb, ending up on multiple leaderboards by the end of the year. The Amazon series tells the story of a plane crash on multiple timelines and constructs one exciting mystery after the next. And far better than comparable young-adult series from Amazon like Panic or I know what you did last summer.
Vanity Fair even called the survival drama a “one of the few streaming series whose length feels deserved”. Because The Wilds managed to do what so many other shows spectacularly fail to do: Authentic female characters with different backgrounds, identities and sexual preferencesn to tell without feeling like an uninspired diversity checklist.
So the shock was deep when Deadline announced that The Wilds didn’t get a third season on Amazon will. The cast was also affected. Mia Healey, one of the leading actresses, thanked fans of the series and her character in an Instagram post: “Love you all, love you Shelby. I am forever a changed person and forever grateful. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

The action is reminiscent of the desperate attempt by some fans to find a new home for the canceled series Good Girls. Yet even Netflix had no mercydespite the show hitting millions on the streaming giant when it first aired on TV — and bailing out another canceled series, Manifest.
The Wild fans seem to be pinning their hopes on the US streamer Hulu and are addressing the provider in several tweets. If the provider grabs The Wilds, the show could continue in Germany Become part of the Disney+ subscription.
It remains to be seen whether the fan campaign will be successful. As of now, the international series landscape is in any case poorer by a show that is as exciting as it is extraordinary.
