Game of Thrones Stars and Killer Spurs? That sounds suspiciously like The Last of Us. However, Amazon has produced its own apocalypse. In The Rig – Strike From Below kick equals four Game of Thrones stars as an oil rig crew against microscopic killers.
Amazon is now extending the British mystery series The Rig for a second season, reports the industry magazine Deadline exclusively.
Amazon extends The Rig despite bad ratings: “Quote”
The entire first season of The Rig is set almost entirely on a Scottish oil rig. As the crew of one mysterious fog is enveloped, they lose contact with the coast and inexplicable events set the crew against each other.
The Rig starts promisingly as a disaster series. The first two of the six episodes are scary and densely told. That certainly explains the astonishingly high rating of 69 on Metacritic.
The ratings of the viewers speak a completely different language on all major platforms. At Amazon itself, the ratings are mostly very lenient and a 3.2 out of 5 for The Rig is sobering for the streaming service. The result is not exactly inviting for the IMDb (5.8 out of 10) and Moviepilot (4.6 out of 10) either.

Emily Hampshire in The Rig
Moviepilot member Mil van de Maas criticizes the boring tale:
Some very good acting performances go hand in hand a story that could not be told in a less exciting way.
Michael1918 wishes better budget:
Disappointed me! The subject matter is good, but poorly implemented. (…) If the screenplay had been stronger, if a little more had been invested in the equipment, a lot more would have been possible.
Moviepilot member cherubium has it after the 3rd episode I couldn’t stand it anymore:
A story that fits on a beer mat, needs to be inflated for an entire season. Absolutely nothing is progressing. Just completely useless ramblings to somehow fill the time. Canceled after episode three.
Somehow, however, The Rig managed to keep enough people on board to be extended. It certainly helped that Season 1 only has six episodes.
The stars of Game of Thrones and Schitt’s Creek return in season 2 of The Rig
Certainly not only the good reviews of the first two episodes but also the big names attracted a lot of people. It’s the new series from, after all Schitt’s Creek darling Emily Hampshire. In addition, gather in season 1 equal four Game of Thrones stars:
Iain Glen as Oil Rig Boss (in Game of Thrones: Jorah Mormont)
Owen Teale as his biggest critic (in Game of Thrones: Ser Alliser Thorn)
Emun Elliott as Crew Member (in Game of Thrones: Marillion)
Mark Addy as Company Employee (in Game of Thrones: Robert Baratheon)
Showrunner Elle MacPherson assures that season 2 will feature the excellent cast. Not all characters survived season 1, however the big names stay in the series. MacPherson wants to continue exploring the characters and mythology behind the Killer Spurs.
Season 1 ended with a massive cliffhanger. There should be one for us completely different 2nd season expect. Hopefully without endless cat-and-mouse games with spores and more of the promised depth.
