Super talent Alvar Myhlback has hardly had time to establish himself at senior level.
Nevertheless, he already has a clear goal of what he wants to win most of all during his career – and it’s not a World Cup or Olympic gold.
– It is something very special to win it, he says in SVT’s Kallprat.
He is only 18 years old, but already one of Sweden’s greatest hopes for the future in cross-country skiing on the men’s side. Alvar Myhlbackwho is basically a cross-country skier, was in the squad that competed in the cross-country skiing World Cup in Lillehammer last weekend. There, however, it was clear that he still has some way to go to the top of the world.
Alvar Myhlback in SVT’s Kallprat
When he participated in the third episode, in the second season, of SVT’s sports talk show Kallprat, he received many questions about how he sees the future and his dual commitment to both cross-country skiing and long-distance running. He tells the presenter Johan Kücükaslan that he likes to combine the sports as long as possible.

Although he himself maintains that it is more exciting and more authentic to do long-distance running, he finally agrees that it is “more credible” to be a cross-country skier. This is the public opinion:
– It is greater to win a WC gold than to win the Vasaloppet, he says in the program.
Alvar Myhlback came third in the Vasaloppet
Having said that, it is not clear that Alvar Myhlback would rather win a WC gold than a classic long race in the Ski Classics. Above all, there is one race that he would rather come first in than anything else. Being from Bjursås in Dalarna, he has a fondness for the Vasaloppet, a race that he himself came third in last year, even though he was only 17 years old .
– WC gold in five miles ahead of the Vasaloppet?, asks Kücükaslan.
– If the WC gold is in Falun WC 2027, then maybe I’d rather take it. Otherwise, I take the Vasaloppet.

Johan Kücükaslan then mentions what most people consider to be the biggest thing you can win as an athlete. But it is waved away by Myhlback. He doesn’t seem particularly interested in Olympic gold either.
– An Olympic gold then, ahead of the Vasaloppet?
– There is something special about the Vasaloppet. Otherwise, the championship will be held in Sweden. It really has to be close for it to be as big as the Vasaloppet, says the 18-year-old.
– But hey, I’m talking about the Olympics here!, gasps a stunned presenter.
– Yes, you do. But everyone can probably agree that the Vasaloppet is something very special to win it. I prefer to combine them, says Alvar.
What do you say about Alvar Myhlback’s love for Vasaloppet? Does it stop him from becoming as good a cross-country skier as he can be? Or does it not matter that he wants to invest in long-distance running for a while longer? Please write a comment!
