Although Warhammer Online died 10 years ago, they have an event going on right now that old school MMORPG fans love

The MMORPG Warhammer Online (2008-2013) is a sad story for many fans of PvP MMORPGs. Because the online role-playing game only had a short life despite a lot of potential and a fantastic license. But in 2023 fans can still play it.

What is the sad story of Warhammer Online?

  • The MMORPG Warhammer Online was launched in 2008 as the unofficial sequel to Dark Age of Camelot (Release 2001), a cult-revered PvP MMORPG that pitted huge crowds of players against each other in battles in the pre-WoW era.
  • Warhammer is a fantastic and rich license. At release, Warhammer Online got good reviews of around 85%, winning “Best MMO 2008” awards everywhere
  • But ultimately the MMORPG fell short of EA’s expectations. The license with Games Workshop expired and the game died in 2013, after only 5 years.
  • For many fans of the game, this was far too early and before the game could reach its full potential. To this day, the man behind the project, Marc Jacobs, is mad at EA and prefers to do his own thing now.

Private Server brings back open RvR “just like before”.

What is this event now? Since 2014, fans have been running a private server for Warhammer Online with “Return of Recckockning”. The “Sigmartag” event is currently running there. It lasts until May 30th.

The event will offer players the very Open Realm vs. Realm action that fans of Dark Age of Camelot loved and that Warhammer Online was also known for.

As PC Gamer writes, players can earn a “Skull of the Fallen Enemy” by killing an enemy.

These skulls can be exchanged for boosts in your faction’s capitals.

At 1000 skulls, a relic will spawn that you can pick up and carry to your opponent’s shrine for more bonuses.

This is pretty much the stuff that fans of “old realm vs. realm” MMORPGs like Dark Age of Camelot or Warhammer Online still rave about to this day – “the good old days.”
