Dauntless was once intended to be a free alternative to Monster Hunter, but was lost with the release of Monster Hunter World. On December 5th, 2024, the multiplayer is now daring to restart and not only has a big update in its luggage, but will also appear on Steam for the first time.
What kind of game is this? Dauntless is a free2play game in which you hunt monsters as a so-called “Slayer”. Similar to Monster Hunter, you collect monster parts to create equipment and weapons. You can go out either alone or in co-op with other Slayers.
Dauntless offers different modes:
You can play the whole thing on PS4 / PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. The title was previously only available from Epic Games, but with the update it will finally be available on Steam from December 5, 2024. However, an Epic Games account is still required to play on Steam.
A new beginning with Dauntless: Awakening
What makes the update different? The release on Steam also comes with a huge update called Dauntless: Awakening, which completely overhauls the game. In addition to a fresh coat of graphics, the progression system, main and side quests and the level of difficulty have also been revised.
In addition, seasonal hunter passes and a type of loot box will be introduced, which will contain cosmetic items. The developers promise “as much transparency and integrity as possible” with the loot boxes (via playdauntless.com).
In addition, the monsters were given new behaviors and the worlds were supplemented with more exploration incentives. The interface, the combat experience and a few other points are also getting an overhaul. You can find the entire overview of all content and changes here.
It remains to be seen whether the new beginning will bring the desired success. Dauntless definitely offers a good basis for this, because it serves the core elements of the Monster Hunter games in a free and fresh version.
The studio behind Dauntless has had anything but easy times in the past and even had to stop new projects.
