The new Popular Front and left-wing organisations are calling for a demonstration this Saturday, September 7, against the appointment of Michel Barnier to Matignon.
In many cities in France, trade unions and left-wing political organizations are calling for demonstrations on Saturday, September 7 to denounce “Emmanuel Macron’s coup.” Former minister and European Commissioner for the Republicans Michel Barnier was appointed Prime Minister on Thursday, September 5, succeeding Gabriel Attal. A choice by the new occupant of Matignon that is angering the left, with the New Popular Front (LFI, PS, EELV and PCF) having come out on top in July with a very small relative majority.
In a statement published on Tuesday, August 27, Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s party considers that Emmanuel Macron “is seriously endangering democracy by refusing the results of the ballot boxes and a government of the new popular front.” The rebellious consider that the NFP “won the legislative elections” because it was the political coalition that obtained the most seats in the National Assembly. “We hope that the political, union and associative forces committed to defending democracy will join this call,” adds La France insoumise.
The PS refuses, EELV will be in the streets
While LFI called on other political forces to join it in the ranks of the September 7th mobilization, the Socialist Party declined the invitation. Following a National Bureau, the choice was made not to join LFI’s call. Conversely, environmentalists will be in the streets on September 7th, as Marine Tondelier stated. The communists are also planning demonstrations. The CGT will not participate in the demonstration of youth organizations and LFI.
Demonstrations are being held throughout the day in all major cities in France. More than 130 demonstrations are expected this Saturday. According to the list posted on the La France Insoumise website, 123 rallies are being held in France.
