Alpine skiing: Marco Odermatt took his twelfth consecutive victory in giant slalom – approaching Ingemar Stenmark’s record: “I feel nervous”

It looked like the streak was going to break when the Swiss made a big mistake and was about to run out at the start of the second round.

– I was aware that the miss was imminent and put pressure on myself: “Come on, it’s still possible”. I didn’t think it would be enough, but the second part of the track was perfect, Odermatt told the international skiing federation, Fis.

– It’s fantastic that it works every time, I don’t know why, thinks Odermatt, who passed Annemarie Moser-Pröll’s eleven consecutive victories in downhill races in the 1970s.

“Really want to beat the record”

The Swiss now has only Ingemar Stenmark ahead of him. The Swede took 14 straight victories in giant slalom in 1978-80.

– I feel nervous these days because I really want to break this record. Then it’s not enough just to ski well, I really have to win. If you are so close, you want it even more, but it is so difficult in every race, says Odermatt.

There are two giant slalom races left in the nearly perfect season for Odermatt, who has already secured the overall World Cup for the third year in a row.

William Hansson, 22, reached a second race for the first time in his career and collected World Cup points after finishing 26th.
