Alpine skier Rosa Pohjolainen the season is interrupted due to knee surgery. Pohja’s knee has been showing symptoms since the beginning of the season. In the end, based on magnetic resonance imaging, a spiral tear was found in the knee, which requires surgery.
Ski Sport Finland recovery takes six weeks. If the operation is successful according to expectations, Pohjolainen will still be able to go to the snow in the spring to train and prepare for the next season. However, Pohjolainen will not be seen on the slopes this season.
– Of course, it’s really upsetting. I did not assume when starting the season that we would be in this situation again. There’s nothing you can do for them. Fortunately, it can be fixed as quickly as possible and then you can continue.
It is about the same right knee, which has already been operated on twice before. The knee had been bothering me for a longer time during the season, but it was thought to be largely normal after the previous surgeries. At the beginning of the season, however, Pohjolainen’s knee had swelling and pain. Around Christmas, the knee was photographed, and MRIs revealed something was broken.
– We still tried to put cortisone on the knee and use it to count down the season to the end, because there are many interrupted, broken seasons below, Pohjolainen said.
However, surgery was the most sensible solution, and instead of the Winter Universiade, Pohjolainen will go to the operating table on Friday. This season also coincides with the World Championships in Saalbach, which Pohjolainen also misses.
– It’s not so much the fact that the individual competitions were missed, but more that the season as a whole did not go according to expectations. The summer and early autumn were successful, but after that the knee started to have symptoms, Nordic times.
– Fortunately, it is not a very big operation, that is, it is nothing compared to what previous operations have been. As such, with positive thoughts. Hopefully, with this operation, these knee problems can finally be left behind, Pohjolainen hopes.
