Nella Korpio was seriously aiming for the Levi World Cup, but had to end her sports career due to long-standing back problems.
Nella Korpio25, is ending his alpine skiing career due to back problems. Even at the beginning of November, he was preparing for the Levi World Cup, which will take place this coming weekend, and according to the Helsinki accountant, everything looked really good.
Last week, however, the condition of the back took a significant turn for the worse, and the decision to stop was ultimately made quickly.
– It soon became clear that my back cannot withstand training or competing at the level I want to do it. There is no prospect of getting the back in the condition required by elite sports. After last week’s rest and lightened up training over the weekend, the condition of my back was too bad. I can manage with the pain, but the new troubles caused too much harm to the functionality of the legs and pelvis, Korpio commented in the Ski Sport Finland press release.
Korpio made his debut at the World Cup in Levi in 2016. He scored four World Cup points in his career and finished 20th in the Cup at the Zagreb slalom race in January 2019. In February of the same year, he represented Finland at the World Cup in Åre.
After the breakthrough, the auto-immune disease diagnosed in 2020 and the back pains that had been bothering me for a long time hit me. In recent years, Korpio only rarely competed in the World Cup.
– I am with you in the decision. Still, it brings up a wide range of emotions. This has been a big part of my life and alpine skiing is what I have wanted to do. Now, however, it’s time to turn the page and focus the energy I focused on alpine skiing on other things, Korpio says.
