Alphabets drones are now shopping at the supermarket

Wing adds a new string to its bow for its drone deliveries in Australia. The Alphabet subsidiary has just signed a partnership with the Coles supermarket chain for the Canberra region, the country’s capital. Consumers will be able to choose between 250 products: bread, snacks, fresh products, meals, toilet paper, cosmetics, etc.

“Whether you’ve run out of milk and eggs for breakfast, forgot to pick up a loaf of bread for school lunches, or are just after a fresh grab-and-go snack, customers in our delivery service in Canberra can now get those items they need urgently, delivered by drone,” welcomes the distributor in a press release.

Well, as can be seen in the video above, the payload is still very limited. Wing drones can carry a maximum mass of one and a half kilograms. It is therefore practical if you lack a liter of milk and a lump of butter or even some fruit. But it’s not very suitable for doing your weekly shopping, unless you bring in a squadron of drones.

Until now, Wing already offered deliveries of meals and medical and pharmaceutical products. In a press release, the company indicates that it has made more than 100,000 deliveries in Australia in 2021 and more than 30,000 for the first two months of 2022 alone. It is therefore a use that is beginning to take hold.
