When you think of Keanu Reeves, you probably first think of one of the numerous action films he made throughout his career. From Dangerous Surf to The Matrix to John Wick: Reeves has many iconic action heroes brought to life. At the beginning of the 1990s he ventured into a genre in which he is rarely seen.
In 1992, Reeves directed Bram Stoker’s Dracula, a fantasy horror film directed by none other than Francis Ford Coppola. The master director behind the Godfather trilogy adapted Bram Stoker’s famous Dracula story as erotic nightmarewhich was particularly impressive with its equipment and staging.

What’s particularly exciting is that Coppola doesn’t reinvent the familiar story. He also has a tear ignorant lawyer named Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves) travels to Transylvania to the castle of a frighteningly pale gentleman who is not only very interested in the real estate situation in London, but also in Harker’s wife.

What makes Bram Stoker’s Dracula so great is the sheer visual power with which Coppola stages the vampire epic. Right from the start he delivers one blood-red prologue, which takes place 400 years before the main story and is still unrivaled in its visual opulence. Even afterwards, Coppola amazes with hypnotizing images.
Much of it may seem old-fashioned from today’s perspective, which perhaps explains why the film often overlooked when it comes to the work of Francis Ford Coppola and Keanu Reeves. However, when Bram Stoker’s Dracula was released in cinemas, it turned out to be a huge success, grossing an impressive $215 million on a $40 million budget.
