War of the Gods sends Henry Cavill into a visually stunning fantasy battle
Early in his career was Cavill mainly in drama roles like the 2002 Monte Cristo adaptation or the popular historical series The Tudors. Then, in 2011, Tarsem Singh’s War of the Gods marked the star’s first major action role in cinema.
Muscled and with a lot of charisma, Cavill plays the human Theseus, the son secretly raised by the god Zeus (Luke Evans) in the Battle against the sadistic king Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) draws.
In addition to Cavill’s performance, the War of the Gods, which is rather thin in terms of content, is worthwhile above all because of the director’s staging. Tarsem Singh is synonymous with films such as The Cell and The Fall visually stunning experiences. A promise that this fantasy carnage also keeps.
The highlight is clearly the 20-minute finale, in which Singh bloody sword fights with stylish slow motion combined. As the gods clad in golden armor collide with the ashen titans, War of the Gods becomes a painterly splatter work of art, crowned by a memorable final scene.
