When Wonder Woman hit theaters in 2017, the DCEU was still under a lot of hope. The superhero blockbuster starring Gal Gadot, which was in development for 21 years, not only made the box office ring, but also gathered a loyal fan base behind it. The situation was less rosy with the sequel Wonder Woman 1984, which was released three years later. You can now stream both films with a subscription on Amazon Prime Video.
Fantasy blockbuster Wonder Woman: gripping superhero action with Gal Gadot and Chris Pine
The Amazon Diane (Gadot) was trained to be a warrior for centuries on her home island of Themyscira. In 1918, however, the island, which is populated exclusively by women, is discovered by the male spy Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). Trevor is finally able to convince Diane to support him in the fight against the Germans in the First World War.
With Wonder Woman, Patty Jenkins created an exciting genre hybrid of war inferno and superhero fantasy, which offers a thrilling story and gripping action. According to Box Office Mojo, the first part was able to 822 million US dollars at the worldwide box office, paying for a budget of over 140 million dollars and the long development history of the film, which stretched over decades. The press also celebrated the film with a score of strong 93 percent at Rotten Tomatoes .
Wonder Woman 1984 could not build on the success
Wonder Woman 1984 could not repeat this success. The film suffered massively from the Impact of the corona pandemic in 2020 and 2021, which is why the sequel was initially released via streaming and was delayed in cinemas. However, the figures here were not even close to those of the first film. Box Office Mojo counts worldwide box office revenue of around 170 million US dollars.

The sequel also fell short of the high expectations of the first part for the press. On Rotten Tomatoes, Wonder Woman 1984 only received a review score of 57 percentHowever, the fans were somewhat more conciliatory in their assessment and still achieved a decent audience score of 73 percent.
And that’s what the sequel is about: In 1984, Diane works as an archaeologist in a museum in Washington DC, where she comes into contact with a strange artifact that is said to grant wishes. Naturally, all sorts of dubious characters are after the yellow gemstone, such as the power-hungry Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) or the inconspicuous Cheetah (Kristen Wiig).
