Allåker berries from Norrland get protection from the EU: “Very funny”

Allåker berries are grown and processed in Västerbotten and Norrbotten – thanks to the long summers and cold winters, the berry thrives here.

– Overall, they only grow in northern Sweden, it belongs here and we must take advantage of that, says Roger Uddstål.

Increased interest

With the new protected designation of origin PDO, berry processor Roger Uddstål hopes that more people will open their eyes to the berry.

– This is something for the Nobel party or the wedding, it’s a nice taste.

The purpose of the protected designations is to help both the producers and the entrepreneurs to inform about the special qualities of the food, according to the Swedish Food Agency.

Uncertain future

While Roger Uddstål is positive about the announcement, the future of the berry growing industry in the county is uncertain.

– I don’t have anyone to take over, it’s a shame. I had hoped this would grow and become big.
