When I wrote my master’s thesis on Alfred Hitchcock a few years ago, I fell in love with his works. Today Psycho, Marnie and Frenzy are running the same three absolutely terrific suspense thrillers on TVwhich every film fan should have seen.
The thriller marathon begins with the Hitchcock classic par excellence: Psycho
When you think of Hitchcock, Psycho immediately comes to mind, and the film evening starts with this masterpiece. Like almost all of his works, Psycho is based on a literary source. When he visits Bates Motel, Hitchcock lulls his audience into safety while luring them down a completely wrong path one of the best twists in film history has produced. Nothing more will be revealed at this point.
If you want to find out more about the background of the production, you shouldn’t miss the star-studded biopic Hitchcock (on Disney+ *), which deals with the filming of Psycho. The thriller also inspired this year’s hit film Trap, which, like Psycho, is based on startling real events.
“A Sex Mystery”: Marnie is my favorite Hitchcock film
What do I love about Hitchcock? It’s mainly them complex characters who all too often move in morally gray areas. This is particularly evident in Marnie. If I had to choose just one favorite Hitchcock film, I would choose the 1964 thriller.
In the trailer for Marnie, which is worth seeing, Hitchcock himself speaks German and explains: “It’s a difficult film to classify. […] You could call Marnie a sex mystery if that term existed, but it’s more than that.”
Marnie – Trailer (German) HD
The game between Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery is absolutely captivating. With all his James Bond charm, Connery plays the wealthy Mark, who plays a traumatized woman freed from her dilemma… or rather blackmailed her. Because of what voluntary decision is Marnie capable of in her situation?
Hitchcock’s characters in a moral gray veil, they couldn’t have been portrayed better. You want to believe in this “loving couple” and yet everything about it is wrong. Especially in times when words like toxic relationship and narcissism are used inflationarily Marnie more relevant than ever.
Hitchcock’s brilliant serial killer thriller Frenzy on TV
In Hitchcock’s penultimate work, Frenzy, he doesn’t act squeamishly. Naked corpses of women being thrown out of cars and a serial killer literally battling rigor mortis. Some things seem macabre, The game of cat and mouse is always exciting.
In addition, the innocent and unsympathetic Dick Blaney (Jon Finch) is pursued by the police while he sets out to find the real murderer. In addition to his sadistic crimes, he appears as a happy bon vivant.
Hitchcock actually manages to make us, at least in one scene to root for this cruel sex offender. He is and remains the master of suspense.
