All the dragons in the series their names and ages

In Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) wanted to rule Westeros with her three dragons, just like her ancestors did. This is exactly what the new series House of the Dragon is all about. 172 years before Dany was born, the house was in the prime of its power. At that time there were numerous dragons in the world and we should see 17 of them in the course of the new series.

Here in the article we collect all dragons in House of the Dragon, i.e. how many there are, their names, their riders and information about their character. This is based on information from the series and the books by George RR Martin.

Current Status: Season 1, Episode 1.

  • Where you can stream the series: A new episode is available every Monday on the streaming service WOW *, formerly known as Sky Ticket, and can also be accessed via Sky Q.

    Syrax

Dragon lady Syrax, like many of her kind, was named after a goddess from the lost realm of Valyria. She is relatively young and not yet combat-experienced. Syrax is described as cheerful and trusting.

  • Current rider: Rhaenyra Targaryen
  • Age: Unknown, probably hatched during the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen, Viserys I’s predecessor.
  • Dragon number 2: Caraxes

    caraxes

Caraxes is a moody dragon, larger than Syrax and far less affable. Rhaenyra’s uncle Daemon’s red beast was early recognized as the fiercest of the dragons in King’s Landing, gaining battle experience under his first rider, Aemon (the father of Rhaenys we know from the series). Aemon was mortally wounded by an arrow and after that his nephew bonded Daemon to the flying eccentric.

  • Current tab: Daemon Targaryen
  • Former Rider: Aemon Targaryen
  • age: presumably hatched during the reign of Jahaerys I and received its first rider 40 years before the storyline of HOTD
  • nickname: The bloodworm
  • Dragon number 3: Balerion

Balerion, or what’s left of him

The greatest of all Targaryen dragons was born in ancient Valyria before it fell. Balerion conquered Westeros with Aegon I, breathed black fire, and is described as wayward. In the series, the Black Horror is already deceased. His skull is laid out in the crypt of the fortress of King’s Landing or Königsmund.

  • last rider: Viserys I
  • Former riders: Aegon I, Maegor I and Aerea Targaryen
  • age: At least 208 years old
  • Nickname: The black terror
  • Status: Dead, deceased of old age in 94 after Aegon’s Conquest
  • Dragon Lore: How are they created and who may ride them?

How the dragons originally came into the world, has not been sufficiently clarified. There are several legends, e.g.:

  • They were discovered by Valyrian miners in the mines of a volcano.
  • A second moon came too close to the sun, broke up and the dragons hatched from it.
  • How are they conceived? They reproduce by laying eggs. Whether only female or male dragons can lay eggs is a matter of debate among the maesters in George RR Martin’s world.

Not every egg spawns a living dragon. If the animal does not hatch, the eggs will petrify over time.

How do they find their riders? It became a tradition under King Viserys I to place a dragon egg in the cradle of newborn Targaryen offspring. But that doesn’t mean that dragons will automatically accept them as riders. Whoever wants to ride a dragon must enter into a covenant with him. A kind of embossing takes place. You can do this as a teenager or as an adult, as long as the dragon accepts you. After that he doesn’t let anyone else on his back.

Do Targaryens only ride dragons? In theory, the Targs aren’t the only ones who can shape dragons. The fire-breathing beasts originally came from Valyria, where there were numerous houses that rode them. However, 102 years before the beginning of the calendar, old Valyria perished and only one house of Valyrian dragon riders remained, which was able to save itself because of a prophecy: the Targaryens.

    House of the Dragon

In House of the Dragon, however, we won’t only see dragon riders with the surname Targaryen. For example, the Velaryon children born of the marriage of Rhaenys Targaryen and Corlys Velaryon have dragons of their own.

Also, in George RR Martin’s books, there is no clear answer as to whether one really needs Targaryen blood or Valyrian ancestry to ride the behemoths. But the fact is that after the fall of Valyria, the Targs Dragon Monopoly possess upon which their power over the rest of Westeros is based.
