All Swedes are now saying the same thing after Daniel Ståhl won the Bragdguldet: “It still has to be said”

Daniel Ståhl won the Bragdguldet 2023.
Now all Swedes say the same thing.
“Anything else would be very strange,” writes SVT commentator Ola Bränholm on X, formerly Twitter.

Daniel Ståhl has long been one of Sweden’s greatest track and field athletes, and definitely the greatest discus thrower. He won WC gold in Doha 2019, Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020, and is now one of the athletes who has had the great honor of being awarded the Gold of Achievement.

Ståhl’s feat

It was at the WC in London 2017 that Ståhl made a real breakthrough, even though the year before he had been world number one on two occasions. At the championship, Ståhl took silver in the discus. The following year he also won European Championship silver, and in 2019 he won the first major gold. It was followed up by taking the Olympic gold in 2020. But it was in the WC 2023 that Ståhl accomplished his greatest achievement.

The 31-year-old led the championship final, when the Slovenian Kristjan Čeh in his last throw Ståhl passed. But in his and the very last throw of the final, Ståhl struck with a throw of 71.46, which meant a new championship record and a Swedish WC gold. For that drama and the incredible performance of Ståhl, he was awarded the Bragdguldet this year. The motivation reads: “for a World Cup gold after a miraculous decision, with supreme control and nerves of steel”.

Highly praised

Ståhl is now being congratulated for his feat.
“Congratulations Daniel Ståhl to the Bragdguldet 2023. Olympic champion, world champion and record holder. No discus thrower has thrown longer in a major championship!”, writes TV profile Tommy Åström on X, formerly Twitter.

“The giant from Järfälla” is highly praised by the Swedish people.
“Daniel Ståhl can probably still be said to be the most awarded feat gold winner in ten years,” writes a user on X.
“Daniel the steel man will receive the Bragdguldet in 2023. Completely fair, I think. Congratulations,” writes another. “
Of course Ståhl! He did what Bragdguldet stands for! A feat!”, writes a third.

Bränholm’s words

There have been many hot candidates for the Bragdguldet this year. Sebastian Samuelsson has been one of them. The biathlete won the mass start in the WC 2023 ahead of the giant Johannes Thigne’s Böand took his first WC gold.
“I would have liked to have seen Sebastian Samuelsson get the performance gold after the mass start at the WC (inexplicably not nominated for Performance of the Year). But. Daniel Ståhl takes it. Anything else would be very strange. And he is so worth it after that turn in the WC’s last throw,” writes SVT commentator Ola Bränholm on X.
