All roads must be repaired – but only one-tenth of the railway’s needs

The grants between 2026 and 2037 must increase by nearly 30 percent compared to the current level. There will be a big investment in the motorways, but for the railway it is only about 10-15 percent of the maintenance debt that must be remedied until 2037.

That is the maximum amount of money that can be disposed of there, according to Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson (KD). He says that the market available for construction machinery is limited, and that it also takes a long time to book time for track repairs.

– It is not possible to change as quickly as when it comes to road maintenance.

Wants to put pressure on the Swedish Transport Administration

When it comes to new investments, the needs are greater than there is money for, says Andreas Carlson.

– Here we see value in trying alternative forms of financing to get more infrastructure for the money, but also to get faster implementation.

It is about working with private actors in smaller projects, initially. According to Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M), this could put pressure on the Swedish Transport Administration.

– After all, it is a large authority and they are sometimes a bit too inefficient, she says.
