All new Black Mirror episodes ranked from rubbish to “must see” – but only 2 are really worth it

All new Black Mirror episodes ranked from rubbish to must

Since last Thursday there are finally new Black Mirror episodes on Netflix – tech horror, dystopias and this time even fantasy horror without end. Each season of the sci-fi series has its ups and downs. But the advantage is: Black Mirror is a so-called anthology series, which means that each episode tells its own story. You don’t have to see everything to understand anything.

Five Sci-Fi Stories at Netflix: The Black Mirror Ranking

Because I wanted to write this article, I did it anyway and my conclusion is: In the new 6th season it is completely sufficient if you watch two episodes. In the following ranking of all five episodes, they logically occupy the first two places.

5th place in the new Black Mirror season: Beyond the Sea

Netflix

Aaron Paul in Beyond the Sea

  • Why is? Beyond the Sea is set in an alternate timeline in 1969. Two astronauts (Josh Hartnett and Aaron Paul) travel deep into space. The twist: They’ve left artificial copies of themselves on Earth that they can “log in” to remotely.
  • Why in this place? Yes, the idea sounds quite interesting, although soul downloads are old hat in the Black Mirror-Verse. Even worse: Beyond the Sea rolls out the already thin concept to the longest episode of the season at 80 minutes. 80 minutes in which unfortunately hardly anything exciting happens.
  • Recommendation: Absolutely skip.
  • 4th place in the new Black Mirror season: Demon 79

    Netflix

    Anjana Vasan in Demon 79

  • Why is? Like Beyond the Sea, Demon 79 is set in the past, but this time in our 1979 world. A British shoe saleswoman (Anjana Vasan) struggles to survive in an openly racist climate. Then some kind of devil genie appears, fueling their murderous fantasies. The survival of the world depends on it.
  • Why in this place? Demon 79 describes the awakening of an identitarian right-wing movement, as we are witnessing today and not only in Great Britain. Something could have been done with it. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know exactly how the episode wants to combine racism, a devil genie and an apocalypse into a working metaphor or at least a meaningful plot.
  • Recommendation: skipping.

  • 3rd place in the new Black Mirror season: Mazey Day

    Netflix

    Zazie Beetz in Mazey Day

  • Why is? A paparazza (Zazie Beetz) quits her job for reasons of conscience. Then an aspiring actress disappears from a movie set. Whoever delivers the first photo of her can get rich with it.
  • Why in this place? The best thing about Mazey Day: The episode is only 40 minutes. You can quickly slide them in between and that doesn’t hurt either. Mazey Day is an apt satire on the paparazzi scourge of the 2000s, but for that very reason it feels kind of out of place. Released 15 years ago, the episode would have been far more powerful.
  • Recommendation: You can watch, but you don’t have to.

  • 2nd place in the new Black Mirror season: Joan is Awful

    Netflix

Annie Murphy in Joan is Awful

  • Why is? Joan (Annie Murphy) lives a relatively normal life somewhere in the digital sector in the near future. Until she discovers the series “Joan is Awful” on Netflix or Streamberry, whose plot is exactly the same as her life and reveals all her secrets.
  • Why in this place? Joan is Awful is extremely close to the zeitgeist, she stabs directly into the debates about artificial intelligence and its effects. This also means that she doesn’t think the complex topic particularly far. Nevertheless, it’s incredibly entertaining to watch the gifted comedy actress Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek) on her tech odyssey.
  • Recommendation: Must see!

  • Number 1 of the new Black Mirror season: Loch Henry

    Netflix

Samuel Blenkin and Myha’la Herrold at Loch Henry

  • Why is? In a Scottish village, a couple of film students stumble upon an exciting true-crime story that Netflix would jump for. The duo digs a little too deep…
  • Why in this place? Loch Henry is the nastiest Black Mirror episode of the new season and it offers the finest, most scathing satire. The protagonists throw all artistic ideals overboard for their documentary about a serial killer. Is it really worth reopening the trauma of an entire community for a little fame and content? Black Mirror gets back to its core here: it holds up a black mirror to the unbridled true-crime lust of Netflix and its audience.
  • Recommendation: Must see!
