The EU leaders meeting in Brussels emphasize the fast and safe delivery of aid through humanitarian corridors and breaks necessary for humanitarian needs.

– Humanitarian aid must be received in Gaza, and the prime minister must use all means to get the aid to Gaza Petteri Orpo (collector) stated after the first day of the meeting on the night before Friday.

The European Council’s decision was preceded by days of political turmoil in which Israel’s legal right to self-defense was weighed against the humanitarian needs of Gaza’s civilians.

Several countries expressed concern that an outright ceasefire would make it difficult for Israel to defend itself against Hamas attacks. According to Orpo, a thorough discussion on the subject was necessary.

– Going through the discussion to find a common understanding took time, but the end result is good.

The expansion of the conflict raises concerns

The European Council also strongly condemns the brutal and indiscriminate terrorist attacks by Hamas in various parts of Israel and the use of civilians as human shields.

EU leaders also expressed concern about the spread of the conflict. The resolution of the summit states that the EU is ready to promote the political process in the Middle East on the basis of a two-state solution.

– I hope that this is also a strong signal to other countries in the Middle East that the EU is serious and united, Orpo says.

The EU summit continues today, Friday. The leaders will discuss, among other things, the economy, supporting Ukraine and immigration.
