Who is working on Dune: Prophecy and why is production taking so long?

The sci-fi series is already in development since 2019 and has a turbulent production history behind. Originally, the Dune dream team, consisting of director Villeneuve and screenwriter Jon Spaihts, was supposed to at least put together the series pilot. Because there were hardly any women involved in the project up to that point (and that seemed strange given the series’ theme), Dana Calvo was also brought on board to act as co-showrunner alongside Spaihts.

However, Legendary Teleivision had different ideas and so Diane Ademu-John was hired as the new showrunner. At this point, Villeneuve was running out of time due to his work on Dune: Part Two and was replaced by Johan Renck, who would have contributed the first two episodes. However, the replacement team left the project shortly afterwards due to creative differences.

Anna Foerster then took over the direction of some episodes, including the series pilot, and Alison Schapker inherited the position of head writer. Brian and Kim Herbert, the son and granddaughter of the Dune creator, are among the executive producers.

Fortunately, there were no additional delays caused by the Hollywood strike, as filming took place in Budapest with British actors. The series has been in the can since December 2023. It is now in post-production.
