All gadgets that stop working – when the 3G network shuts down

All gadgets that stop working when the 3G network

Second and third generation mobile networks – 2G and 3G – are currently being switched off all over the world. 2G was already launched in 1991 and 3G came 15 years later, in 2006.

A strong demand for above all data communication means that the new 4G and 5G networks need to take up more frequency space.

This risks affecting several electronic items you have in the home.

The customers who have 3G will notice it in such a way that their goods start to work significantly worse, or stop working completely.

– The most common is the mobile phone. Then it is about the simpler models. As soon as you buy a new mobile phone, you can count on them working in the most modern networks, says Pernilla Rydmarkproject manager at the Post and Telecommunications Agency (PTS), to The Express.

Here are some of the mobile phones that are affected when the old mobile networks are switched off:

  • iPhone 4 and older
  • Samsung Galaxy S2 and S3
  • Doro mobiles up to 7030
  • How do you know if you have a mobile phone that becomes unusable when the networks are shut down?

A rule of thumb from Telia is that mobile phones with physical buttons (and not touchscreen) only support 2G and/or 3G. There are also some early smartphones that only support 3G.

But it is far from just mobile phones that will be affected when the 2G and 3G network is switched off.

    – There are quite a few products that will be affected by the shutdown, says Rydmark to Expressen.

Here is the full list of electronics that stop working:

  • Alarm systems
  • Remotely controlled heat pumps
  • Robotic lawnmower
  • eCall modem in vehicles for 112 calls
  • Track transmitters for cars, bicycles, containers and animals
  • Surveillance cameras
  • USB adapter for mobile broadband
  • Emergency telephones
  • Electricity meter
  • Telephone exchanges
  • Locking mechanisms
  • Parking machines
  • Meters for water and sewage
  • Control equipment of machines
  • Repeater for signal amplification
  • Weather stations
  • Card terminals
  • Sensors
  • Camera surveillance
  • Gas and water meters
  • “There is also equipment that uses other methods of connection than via the mobile networks and is thus not affected by the phase-out of 2G and 3G”, writes PTS in the information sheet entitled “The Swedish Post and Telecommunications Board’s and the Swedish Consumer Agency’s views on a responsible decommissioning of the 2G and 3G networks”, and continues:

“This is the case if the equipment uses, for example, connection via the technologies WiFi, LoRa or Sigfox.”
