Ahead of MSI 2022, LoL Esports Global Leader Naz Aletaha made a statement about the upcoming tournament;

“Over the last two years, the global COVID-19 pandemic has brought unimaginable challenges in the live events space. During this time, our goal was to organize safe and fair events while preserving the overall experience of fans and pro players as much as possible. Travel restrictions related to the global pandemic still remain real and volatile. And we feel it across our ecosystem.”

“Currently the LPL (China’s regional league) is facing the challenges of the ongoing global epidemic. As a result, the league’s MSI representative will not be able to travel to Busan, Korea. However, thanks to the extensive work of our teams that run our technology, events and competitive operations, the LPL team that qualified to participate will be able to compete in the tournament without contact from China. The team will participate in the tournament from their own institution buildings or the LPL Arena in Shanghai in accordance with local health and safety protocols.

While making this decision, we considered many factors such as security, infrastructure, location and competitive integrity. The LPL has the infrastructure to support remote play, and the ping between China and Korea is at a reasonable level. To make it a fair tournament, we will use a network latency tool that will allow us to keep the ping of all teams in the tournament as close to 35ms as possible.”

“We used the same tool to regulate the ping between China and Korea for the LPL vs LCK match during the 2020 Mid-Season Cup. In order not to disrupt the competitive integrity of the tournament, we will ensure that all MSI teams do their friendlies and training at this ping value. We will maintain referee support and supervision in both Korea and China throughout the tournament.”

“The past two years have been a rough one, but the passion we share for LoL has never changed. Thank you to the fans, teams, pro players and partners for helping us find our way through these difficult circumstances. We’re excited to welcome the best teams in LoL Esports to MSI on May 10. As MSI 2022 approaches, we will continue to publish information and updates about the event, tickets and more on lolespor.com and on our social channels!”
