Algeria announced on Monday, November 7 that it had officially submitted its application to join the BRICS group, a group of states which brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The announcement was made Monday by Leila Zerrouki in charge of major international partnerships at the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A shown interest since the summer by President Tebboune.
This Algerian request to integrate the Brics comes in an international context marked by the war in Ukraine and the desire of China and Russia to create a counterweight to what they consider to be ” western hegemony “.
The five Brics countries intend to strengthen their weight and better advance their points of view in international economic negotiations, in particular at the G20, the IMF and the WTO.
At the last summit of Brics in June 2022 in China, the decision to open membership to other countries was taken. Countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia or Algeria could therefore apply.
Algeria has strong diplomatic and economic relations with the countries of this group. China and Russia have already said they support his request. South Africa is also a traditional ally of Algiers, the main one on the African continent.
The change at the head of power in Brazil and the return of President Lula could also play in favor of this candidacy.
All these elements together should consolidate the Algerian position.
