Opposition leader Nika Gvaramia in Georgia has been beaten and arrested by police in connection with a raid on an opposition party’s office, television images show.

The arrest comes after the country’s prime minister vowed to punish political opponents he believes are behind the protests raging in the country since he decided to freeze talks on EU membership until 2028.

“Opposition politicians who orchestrated the violence of the last few days while hiding in their offices will not get away,” Prime Minister Irakli Kobachidze said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Extensive protests against Kobachidze’s decision regarding the EU have been ongoing in the country since Thursday.

The activists have also demanded that the autumn elections be rescheduled. Georgia went to the polls on October 26, but the result has not been recognized by either the European Parliament or the opposition, which claims electoral fraud. According to the official result, the ruling Georgian Dream party, to which Irakli Kobachidze belongs, won 89 of the parliament’s 150 seats.

Georgian President Salomé Zourabichvili is pro-Western and pro-EU and has expressed support for the protesters in recent days.
