Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks on targets in government-controlled parts of Syria in recent years, including the airports in Damascus and Aleppo.
Israel has previously confirmed that it is targeting bases belonging to Iran-backed groups such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which supports the Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad’s rule.
Aleppo, which has suffered widespread devastation during the Syrian civil war, was also hit hard by the large Turkey-Syria earthquake in February. The airport in Aleppo has since been used to bring aid shipments into the area.
