The price landed at 2.7 million US dollars, corresponding to roughly 27.5 million kroner, according to the auction house Sotheby’s.
The white jacket, emblazoned with an American flag, the initials of the US Space Agency, an Apollo 11 mission badge and the name E. Aldrin, is part of a personal collection of items that the 92-year-old Aldrin has now chosen to sell.
According to Aldrin, the time felt right to sell the items, “which for many are symbols of a historic moment, but which for me have remained personal mementos of a life dedicated to science and exploration,” he said in a statement last week.
He also clarified that the jacket was not worn during the moon landing itself, but on the journey home and away. The suits Aldrin and colleague Neil Armstrong wore on the moon are part of the National Air and Space Museum’s collections in Washington DC.
