You may have already asked yourself the question: which inhabitants of European countries consume the most alcohol? The European statistics office, Eurostat, has just published on February 1st the ranking of European countries according to their budget devoted to the purchase of alcoholic beverages.
The day after the end of Dry January, this challenge which consists in abstaining from drinking alcohol throughout the month of January, the European statistics office, Eurostat, publishes a classification concerning this drink. Objective: to rank European countries according to their alcohol consumption budget.
Latvians on the top step of the podium
At the top of the ranking published by Eurostat, we find Latvia. Indeed, Latvians are the Europeans who spend the most money on alcohol.
According to data from the statistics organization, they would spend 5% of their annual budget on the purchase of alcohol, on average.
This is more than the Estonians, who are at 4.7% or the Poles, at 3.7%. The Eastern European countries are at the top of the ranking because Lithuania comes in fourth place with 3.6% and in fifth place is the Czech Republic, also with 3.6%.
France comes at the end of the ranking
France, like Italy, comes far behind the Eastern European countries. France is ranked in 17th place with a result of 1.8%. The end of the ranking is occupied by Spain (1.4%) and the Netherlands (1.3%). Greece and Italy bring up the rear, with one percent of their annual budget devoted to the purchase of alcoholic beverages. And the average “alcohol budget” in Europe is estimated at 1.8%.
Finally, Eurostat also quantifies the total European budget devoted to alcohol. He puts forward the figure of 128 billion euros, for the year 2021, or 0.9% of the gross domestic product of all 27 members of the European Union.
