International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) President Rafael Mariano Grossi stated that the explosions in and around the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine are absolutely “unacceptable” and said, “Whoever is behind this must stop immediately. As I have said many times before, you are playing with fire.” used the phrase.
In a written statement from the IAEA, there was an assessment of the large number of explosions that took place last night and this morning in and around Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhia.
In the statement, it was emphasized that dozens of bombs hit both the area where the nuclear power plant is located and its surroundings, and noted that experts could see the explosions.
In the statement, it was stated that as a result of the heavy bombardment, some buildings as well as the equipment were damaged in the facility, but there was no situation that would endanger nuclear safety and security, and the thoughts of IAEA Director Grossi were also included.
“YOU ARE PLAYING WITH FIRE”
Accordingly, Grossi said, “Yesterday and this morning, the news from our team is extremely disturbing. The explosions that occurred in the area where this large nuclear power plant is located are absolutely unacceptable. Whoever is behind this must stop immediately. As I have said many times before, you are playing with fire.” shared his opinion.
Stating that talks are continuing with the parties to establish a safe zone free of conflicts in and around the nuclear power plant, Grossi said, “I will not give up until the safe zone is real. As the ongoing bombardment shows, there is a need for a safe zone more than ever.” used the phrase.
Grossi once again called on the parties to establish a “nuclear safety and security zone” free of conflicts in and around the power plant.
In order to prevent frequent power cuts and a possible nuclear disaster due to the increase in conflict and bombardment in and around the nuclear power plant in recent months, Grossi held talks with the Russian and Ukrainian authorities on establishing a safe zone last month, but had not yet made any tangible progress in this direction.
