President of Syria Bashar al-Assad has commented on the coup in the country for the first time.
Al-Assad’s statement was published on Monday on the official Telegram channel of the Syrian presidential administration. Its date is recorded as December 16, and its place of writing is stated to be Moscow.
The president, who fled to Russia, says that at no point during the course of events has he considered resigning from office or fleeing abroad.
Al-Assad says that he remained in Damascus on the day of the coup, December 8, and left the country only in the evening.
