Aix-en-Provence Festival: “The Threepenny Opera”, a hymn to bandits and London slums

Avignon Festival GROOVE with Bintou Dembele

Opening and ending one of the biggest operatic events in the world with a parody is the bet of the 75th edition of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. The Threepenny Opera, a play enhanced with cheeky musical interludes created by the German duo Bertold Brecht and Kurt Weill in Berlin in 1928, takes to the mythical stage of the Archdiocese in a new French translation. With – for the first time – the troupe of the Comédie-Française and a black actor in the main role, the Senegalese Birane Ba alias Mackie Messer, Mack La Lame.

Of Senegalese origin, Birane Ba, 28, portrays the role of the criminal charmer with elegance.
