A residential building and a preschool were hit in the strike, according to Kindeya Gebrehiwot, spokesperson for the Tigrean People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), who said civilians were among the victims. Two aid sources told AFP they had been informed of the attack, but had no further details.
Shortly after reports of the attack, Ethiopia’s government warned of action against the TPLF and urged civilians to stay away from military targets in the region.
The conflict in Tigray, in northern Ethiopia, escalated on Wednesday as a ceasefire reached in March broke down and fighting broke out. This comes after both sides have repeatedly accused each other of a lack of progress in negotiations to end the conflict.
