Aimed at normal people, not crazy freaks

Leading Twitch streamer Asmongold is addicted to the new survival game Palworld (Steam, Xbox) and he has a theory as to why. The game from Japan is not aimed at Western culture, but at “normal people”. They don’t care about all the controversies that gaming journalists and bloggers are so upset about, they just want a good game.

This is the situation:

  • Palworld is an action-adventure survival game from a Japanese developer. This had been announced for a while, but most people didn’t have Palworld on their radar or didn’t take it seriously.
  • On January 18th, Palworld appeared in early access on Steam for €26 and was a hit there. It is now the second largest game of all time on Steam.
  • Streamers have also jumped on the game. The German Gronkh is the world leader here, ahead of two Japanese streamers, but the prototypical WoW player Asmongold is also gripped by the fever.
  • Asmongold’s career and life in 3 minutes – what defines him?

Twitch streamer Asmongold is talking himself into a rage

This is Asmongold’s theory as to why Palworld is such a hit: Asmongold is using Palworld’s popularity to sing the praises of Japanese developers while simultaneously attacking Western gaming culture.

The streamer talks himself into a rage in a Twitch stream, an excerpt of which is circulating as a clip.

The Japanese developers said in an interview that they aimed the game at “Americans” and therefore included weapons (because Americans like to shoot). A gender-neutral character editor was installed because Americans like to create “very ugly” characters.

Asmongold was immediately in his element here:

“That is not true. When Japanese fans see this: It’s not the Americans who make ugly characters, it’s the development studios who make those ugly characters. The real players, the real people – none of them want this Type A, Type B bullshit. Just make normal figures, with normal proportions, and make them hot. This is what normal people want to see.”

This is what “normal players” want: Asmongold then continues his rant. Actually, the “normal gamer” doesn’t care at all, he just wants a video game that he enjoys. He also said that in a tweet.

Issues such as the use of AI, slavery, cruelty to animals or copyright infringement are all “made-up problems” that normal people don’t care about at all. They just wanted to have a good game, then it would sell well.

Asmongold scoffed at a comment under this tweet. Someone had written: “Palworld wasn’t a good game, just a game that people wanted” – which, Asmongold said, was exactly the attitude of “gaming journalists.”

Social media freaks don’t have any money anyway

He sees this as a problem with Western games: Palworld has understood that players are primarily concerned with the “gameplay loop”.

But many Western games would be aimed at people who constantly feel attacked by everything and then complain about something on social networks.

But that is a mistake because these people are “grown-up babies” who have no money anyway.

“Normal people” who have money and contribute to society, like electricians, just wanted to play games that were fun. You have to ignore the opinions of “some crazy bloggers”.

Social media geeks who are offended by something a video game character says need to be booked. You shouldn’t look for them as a target group. The only industry that should target these people is the manufacturers of straitjackets.

Asmongold – the ordinary people’s lawyer

This is what lies behind it: That a multi-millionaire who grew up explaining to people a fantasy world with orcs, goblins and elves and whose fans scream in horror when a woman wanders into his gaming room is the advocate for “normal people”, may seem a bit strange.

Ultimately, this is a secret of success for influencers like Asmongold: He speaks for his target group, “the normal people,” and differentiates them from “the strange freaks” out there. Anyone who listens to Asmongold is sitting in the tree house, to which the evil others have no access. That creates identity.

Many successful media creators in the USA are doing very well with this model, which is an alternative to the mainstream and classic media. The huge podcaster Joe Rogan also creates his relevance by clearly distinguishing himself from other opinions in the mainstream media.

The idea that all gaming bloggers or gaming journalists have a completely shifted perspective and that only he sees the truth is a bit absurd, especially at Palworld, because there is currently no outcry against Palworld in the international gaming press.

Not even left-wing and socially critical US gaming sites like Polygon are currently railing against the game, but rather publishing guides and positive articles. Asmongold fights against the air to some extent, but does so very successfully.
